Diabetes South Africa

Diabetes South Africa (DSA) is a non-profit, public benefit organisation, founded in 1969 to support and advocate for all people living with diabetes in South Africa.

Diabetes South Africa (DSA) was founded in 1969 as a support and an advocate for all people with diabetes in South Africa. It is a non-profit, public benefit organisation and relies heavily on volunteers, many of them people living with diabetes and their families.

DSA works to prevent diabetes through ongoing awareness programmes, including screening and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and to help people with diabetes of all ages live full, healthy lives as free as possible from serious complications. It also acts as an advocate for people with diabetes, lobbying for better facilities, more affordable medication and improved services.

The organisation runs regular workshops and support groups and publishes a quarterly magazine, Diabetes Focus. Its national office is in Cape Town, with four branches around the country linked to a network of more than 100 smaller local branches and support groups. DSA is a member of the International Diabetes Federation.

Diabetes is one of the most common conditions engraved on a MedicAlert emblem. It tells a responder at once that a collapse may be a hypoglycaemic episode rather than something else.
